ADSL ready for The Galway Cup   07/08/2017

The Races may be run and the curtain has fallen on the Film Festival but for footballers the highlight of the Galway summer only kicks off this week with the annual staging of the Galway Cup.

The Athlone District Schoolboy/Girl League will be there with one squad taking part in the 2004 Elite competition.

The Galway Cup has grown into a very prestigious international football tournament and the ADSL, who have entered teams since 2008, will take part in their 10th Tournament.

The ADSL compete in the 2004 Elite Section and have been drawn in a very competitive Group D alongside the Waterford Schoolboy League, the North East Counties League and Colorado Rapids from the USA.

The ADSL are represented by a 19 strong squad in Galway. There are a number missing due to holidays and other unavailability but the bulk of this squad had a great 2016/17 Season reaching the semi-finals of the national SFAI U-13 Inter-League Tournament and finished third in the all-island Subway Tournament in Northern Ireland beating Derry and the Cork League en route.

The ADSL kick off their Galway Cup on Wednesday with two Group games. They play the Waterford Schoolboy League at 10.40am and follow that up with a game against North East Counties with a 4.45pm kick-off. Then on Thursday the ADSL will play Colorado Rapids from the USA in the final Group game.

Only the top team in the Group will qualify for the Cup semi-final on Friday so it promises to be tight and tense. There are competitions for all teams into Saturday but the ADSL will be aiming to top a difficult Group and hope to progress to the elite stages of this elite section.

The Galway Cup is generally very keenly contested and is usually a good guide to the following years Kennedy Cup. Sligo/Leitrim won the Galway Cup in 2016 and reached this years’ Kennedy Cup Final. There is also competition in the Galway Group across other age groups and ability and is generally a fantastic festival of football.

The ADSL have always valued the Galway Cup as an important part of their young players continuing development. This years’ Squad have had nine Training sessions to prepare and have played four warm-up games to fine tune their efforts for Galway.

The ADSL Squad for Galway is David Campion, Ben Donegan, Zak Maguinness, Tobby Conteh, Sam Osho, Shane Hanley, Odhran Lawlor, Danny Ryan, Rian Dully, Darragh Lowry, Abdul Idris, Jason Cunningham, Cian Connell, Olabiyi Odekunle, Brian Connell, Eoghan Raleigh, Shane Harrington, Aaron Cunningham and Cian Rainey.

We wish the ADSL squad the very best of good luck. You can follow their progress on or for a more nuanced perspective you can follow the Galway Cup Diary on the ADSL website
