Galway Cup Reflection   13/08/2017

2017 GALWAY CUP – REFLECTIONS

And so the Galway Cup comes to an end.

We had high hopes of doing really well which were not fully realised. Those were legitimate high hopes.

Yes there were mitigating reasons. We were missing a few. We lost Odhran to injury in the first half of the first game.

But really we did not play well enough against Waterford and did not take our chances against the eventual winners Colorado Rapids. Otherwise we had three good wins and three good performances against quality opposition in NEC, Cavan/Monaghan and then Kildare and finished strongly with two very good wins and excellent performances.

As a team and a squad we learned a lot. We are definitely better for the experience. We also got invaluable experience in Tournament play and in appreciating the sometimes very fine margins in deciding ultimate success.

We also played very well at times and received many compliments from the FAI, Scouts and other observers for the way we played.

We also had a number of outstanding individual performances with a good number of players considerably enhancing their growing reputations and receiving good reviews from a number of scouts and from FAI representatives.

We also had overall a great time and the memories of the good football will compete with the craic on Silver Strand and in the sea but both will endure for a long time. Happy days.

It was also important for our League that we are here. It would be a huge shame if these players and others like them into the future were denied opportunities and experiences like this.

A big thanks is due to the following:

  • Thanks to Dermot and David for all the hard work put in by them for the last few weeks and to Dermot for all his good work in Galway over the last four days;
  •  Thanks to Shane, Keith and Mick for all they have done for these players;
  •  Thanks to the ADSL for giving these boys this opportunity and experience;
  • Thanks to Temple Villa for the use of their grounds for Training;
  •  Thanks to the players Clubs for all they have done for them;
  •  Thanks to Derek Duggan and Duggan Transport for the Bus etc and to each of the drivers;
  •  Thanks to everyone at the Galway Cup for a brilliant Tournament;
  •  Thanks to the Referees etc;
  •  Thanks to the Parents for your help and support. Your sons are a great credit to you. You should be very proud of them. A special thanks to Jackie and Philip for the help on the bus on Friday and to Jackie (again) for the half-time oranges;
  •  Thanks to all those who sent messages of good wishes and support and especially from former ADSL players which says a lot;
  •  A huge thanks to these magnificent players, these fantastic young men. You represented yourselves, your family, your Club and your League with great honour and distinction in everything you did, on and off the pitch. You are mighty men;
  •  Finally, a big thanks to Silver Strand for simply unforgettable memories and to the ADSL’s very own plunge pool, otherwise known as the Atlantic Ocean!
