Kennedy Cup Day 3   13/06/2018

KENNEDY CUP – DAY 3

             TUESDAY 12TH JUNE 2018

12th June. A very famous date.

Thirty years ago today, the 12th June 1988, Ireland famously beat England in the first game of Euro’88 which was the first time Ireland had qualified for a major Finals. That day in Stuttgart will never be forgotten by those lucky enough to be there that day or to have watched it. Special days and that day has gone down in Irish history and not just sporting history.

A day never to be forgotten. Even Christy Moore wrote a song about it. Good man Joxer!

12th June 2018 may also in time be regarded as a famous day in history. The day in Singapore when a despotic, despised, dictator meet with the President of North Korea. Christy Moore might well write a song about that too.

12th June in the Kennedy Cup is the Tuesday. Moving day!

Christy Moore should be writing about our day.

We were up for 9.00am and for breakfast, then some quiet time and then we had our Team Meeting.

We have a few changes but we know what we must do. All focus is on this Carlow match. A win changes everything. A defeat does not bear thinking about. We however were also reminded that this game is every bit as crucial for Carlow. They are under just as much pressure as we are.

       ADSL      0    :     CARLOW LEAGUE    1

Hugely disappointing.

We got a very good performance but not the crucial result.

This is hard to take.

We were under sustained pressure for the first five minutes and during which they three corner kicks and we barely got out of our half. But we settled into it and were well on top by half-time.

A great passing move involving Jason C, Bobby, Biyi and Shane H got the ball out wide to Rian who cut inside but his low shot was just wide hitting the side netting.

Carlow then had a half chance but fluffed it drilling the ball across the face of the goal.

Then on 18 minutes Jason’s corner kick came off the crossbar with Shane H narrowly heading the rebound over. A great chance!

Then just before half-time good passing picked out Rian again who took on and beat three defenders with his dipping shot just flying over. We were well on top and could be very happy with our first half.

Carlow started the second half very strongly and it a few episodes of last gasp and sometimes desperate defending to keep them out with Shane K putting his body on the line on one occasion.

However we settled back into it and a few changes and fresh legs gave us new impetus.

Then just seven minutes into the half they took the lead. There was three of them queuing up at the far post in splendid isolation with A

We threw everything at them to get it back but we just could not. They defended like their very lives depended on it. But it was not to be!

There was heartbreak and utter disappointment all over.

Over on the other pitch the DDSL were beating South Tipp 7-0!

We took some consolation in the knowledge that Carlow would beat South Tipp and that we might nich 2nd or 3rd.

But we have a big game this evening.

It was back to the House for Lunch (Spag Bol and another feast) and then a rest and all before our 4.45  Team meeting and ahead of our game with the DDSL. The ADSL Under-13’s are down for the day to get a feeling for the competition for next year and Rory fed them as well for lunch. What a man!

All our focus was on the DDSL match.

We got there in god time and did a good warm-up.

                        ADSL   0    :      DDSL    2

What an effort and what a performance!

We employed a defensive screen which required huge concentration and an incredible work rate and attitude.

These boys were magnificent. In fact we used 19 players in this game rolling fellas on and off in the incredible heat. (Biyi was out with an injury). This was an outstanding effort.

A lot of teams are beaten before they start against the DDSL. They are a slick machine and have yet to concede a goal here and won the Tournament last year without conceding a goal. David’s and Dermot’s plan was the right one and was almost perfectly implemented by these boys.

We were really frustrating them and also had a few chances ourselves. Joseph had a shot on goal after 7 minutes; Daragh rolled Danny in with a great ball on 22 minutes but his shot did not carry enough power resulting in a comfortable save. We were however mainly working very hard to keep them out.

It worked until the last play of the first half. Then an attack down our right and a deep cross to the far post was flicked to the net with a great finish.

It was heartbreaking especially so late in the second half.

But these boys just worked harder. Danny had a header 7 minutes into the second half after good pressure but all over the pitch every player was putting in a massive shift.

The DDSL score a second goal 13 minutes into the half. This was a goal of outstanding quality. They just passed through us with a series of slick first time passing and crowned it with a magnificent finish. A fantastic goal by any standard.

We played to the end. We worked extraordinarily hard and nobody could fault the effort or the commitment.

We were devastated after which says it all really.

That devastation was compounded with news that South Tipp had beaten Carlow 3-1! How could that happen?

This means that we finish 4th in the Group! Fourth! Having played so well twice today and having put in a supreme effort against the DDSL! Fourth! Nothing has really fallen for us this week but we are where we are.

There was some time with family and friends after that and then off to the swimming pool for a recovery session. That lifted spirits a bit and then home for dinner.

Rory again was brilliant! Fish! I am not codding! With mashed spuds and vegetables and the most delicious cream sauce. There was also chicken for those who did not like fish but all was delicious.

Then we had a Team Meeting.

On one level we are hugely disappointed to finish fourth yet hugely proud of our two performances today and especially against the DDSL. The fact that 19 players played made it even better.

Now we are in the Trophy competition and play the West Waterford /East Cork League tomorrow at 11.00am.

We will now try to do our best in that.

Thanks to everybody for the huge support today. We hope we did not let you down. Thanks also to the ADSL U-13’s for coming down as well.

Before we went to bed Abdul held a Press Conference during which the unimaginable happened when he sacked Brian as his Assistant. His appointment of Shane Hanney as his new Assistant has taken the football world by storm!

A good way to finish a tumultuous day!

Maybe Christy Moore should write a song about it!
