Kennedy Cup Day 3 2012-06-13 14:08:00

DAY 3 - TUESDAY 12TH JUNE 2012

This was a big day and everyone knew it.
We were hugely disappointed to have lost last night particularly when we felt that we played well and deserved better. But we can do nothing about that now. We can however do something about today.
It was up early for breakfast for our 10.30am kick-off. We were up for 8, had breakfast and down for our team meeting at 8.45. We are very determined. We know that a win this morning or even a draw will leave with all to stay play for going in to the last game this evening.
It was then onto the shuttle bus to the itches. We are on Pitch 2 this morning and again there was a huge crowd there to support us. Amazing.
We did a good warm-up and are ready to go. We are really up for this one.

ADSL 1 : Kerry Schoolboy League 2

Heartbreak!

Sport can sometimes be really cruel and it was devastating today.
We again played well and they were hanging on for the draw when they broke away to score the winner with the very last kick of the game. Cruel!
It was even worse in that we should have had a penalty midway through the second half when it was 1-1. We should have won this game.
We started well but the early momentum was stalled by a stoppage for an injury. We then went behind in just the 10th minute. It was a good run down our right and a good cross but we fumbled the ball and the following up Kerry player managed to bundle the ball over the line. Not really a thing of beauty and a bad goal to give away.
We could have crumbled but we instead stood up.
We battled away and were rewarded with an equaliser just before half-time. It was a fantastic set-piece delivery from out on the right by Sean McG with Dylan getting the vital touch to score. The place went mad. 1-1.
The second half was action packed. Johnny made a great save after 13 minutes. From the resulting corner they missed a great chance at the back post.
Then we really turned on the pressure to dominate the rest of the match. Denji did brilliant to cut in from the end line but was fouled but stayed on his feet with just the keeper to beat but the ref called play back for the free-kick. No advantage to us in that.
We then had a great chance when Ciaran sent in a super cross from the right but Sean McG just could not get his head on it with the goal at his mercy.
Then we should have had a penalty. Sean McG put in a great delivery from a free kick out on the right but just as Dylan was lining up to fire home the loose ball he was pulled back by a defender. A blatant penalty, but nothing given. It was frankly unbelievable and you really would expect a better standard at this level. We were not to know just how brutal a decision that would be.
We kept going and pinned Kerry into their own half We had chances but no goals. Then just as time was up they broke away. We had a chance to clear but the ball fell to the Kerry player who, to be fair, finished brilliantly.
We barely had time to restart before the final whistle.
It was awful. Fellas were in bits. We had played so well, could have won, maybe should have won, but definitely should have drawn but to lose in this way was just awful.
It was very hard to lift ourselves.
We went back to the Accommodation for lunch and to prepare for the last Group game. It started to pour rain for the afternoon to perfectly capture the mood.
After a shower and some food the spirits lifted, a little. Some watched the U-20 Rugby World Cup. Ireland beat Italy and Jack Carty played very well. Jack played for the ADSL in the Kennedy Cup in his time and played for Ireland at Under-15 & 16. It was good to see him play well. Others played the PlayStation while others just had a rest or chatted. It was difficult but some of the parents and family called around and slowly spirits lifted.
Colin got us all going again in the team meeting. We left in the pouring rain to go play South Tipperary in our last Group game. They lost 1-0 to Galway this morning. We both had points to prove.

ADSL 2 : South Tipperary League 0

This was more like it.
We were however one of very few matches to go ahead with most of the other pitches deemed unplayable in the pouring rain.
The game was a little flat early on but eventually settled. Both sides had goals ruled out for offside. Ciaran came close with a good shot from a short free-kick set-piece. Then on 35 minutes we hit the front.
We won a free-kick out on the right outside the box. David lined it up and using a 9-iron he floated the ball into the top far corner. 1-0 to ADSL. A great goal.
Just before half-time we might have had a penalty for a handball. It was not as blatant as this morning but was still a penalty. This one was not given either.
We played some great stuff in the second half. Emmett had his usual stormer, Conor was immense and Sean McG was incredible. We passed the ball well in awful conditions and scored a brilliant second goal. Eddie played a neat pass to Michael who picked out Sean who passed it out to David on the left. David took on and beat his man and put in a great cross for Sean who kept running to flick to the net. A super goal.
We played really well and which put us in a much better mood. It was also nice for one of the Tipp coaches to say that we were easily the best team in the Group. That was poor consolation but still nice to hear. We went back to the accommodation in better form but still knowing we should have done better than third in this Group.
Having eventually dried off we again dined like kings. The grub is fantastic. We then had some down time. A few needed to see Seamus but eventually all gathered to witness Johnny wreak havoc on the PlayStation. It was great fun.
It was a long day. It should have been a better day but we just have to get on with it now and do the best that we can.

NOTE: With all the rain and the other match postponements our match which was due to be played at 3.00pm on Wednesday will now be played at 6.00pm. We do not know who we will play as the other games must first be completed in the morning.
