Malta Day 3 2015-04-02 21:31:00

       MALTA DIARY – DAY 3 – THURSDAY 2ND APRIL 2015

A good night’s sleep works wonders. The boys are well refreshed and ready for a big day.

There was however two complaints.

Danny and Cian T snore. It would not be so bad if they did it in synchrony but they don’t and Jordi is not happy.

Meanwhile the coaches work never appears to be done. After a long day there was still a few volunteers to head out again last night just to check out a few places just to make sure that they would be suitable for the parents. Apparently there is a group of bachelors coming over at the weekend. But you really have just got to admire the selfless dedication of these mighty men to do an inspection and to give prior approval to a few of the local visitor attractions. There is hardly a museum, art gallery or cathedral that they missed out on!

Back in the real world we were down for breakfast at 9.30am. Trixie already has his very own fan club. Daragh and Jack S were hanging around looking for the scraps!

Then it was just rest and prep for the games ahead. Seamus was taking callers.

We left for lunch at 12.30. We walked to a place down in Buggiba Square in the Bay with a view of the blue Mediterranean. Pasta and chicken all round. The weather is only glorious. It was all very relaxing.

But there is an edge about us today. The Tournament kicks off today.

The bus collected us in the Square at 1.30 and we were off to the Victor Tedesco Stadium in Hamrun for our first games.

It is a very impressive venue. The pitch is Astro-Turf. There are large banked seating on one side which gives a fantastic feel to the ground.

This was a quality game and a real good contest. They are a god side and well organised and this was a great game of football.

We played well. We needed to and this was much better than yesterday. We started well and passed the ball well. However we went behind in the 12th minute. They put in a good cross from the left and it was met by a very good header into the top corner.

We responded immediately. Right from the restart. We attacked them. Jordy took on and beat three players and then played it to Aaron to run into space and lift it over the keeper. A great goal for 1-1.

We scored a second just a minute later but it was disallowed for offside. It was a great goal though and a great move. It came from a magic pass from Daniel to Trixie who helped it onto Stephen who flicked it wonderfully to the net. It would have been an amazing goal .

There was loads of chances after that at both ends but no further goals. We played well and can be very happy with the performance. Trixie, as usual, was outstanding. Jack S too had a great game as had Eoin K, Stephen, Jayden, Nashir, Jordan, Aaron and Ryan when he came on in the second half. In fact all played well in a great performance in a great game.

The Scholars were next in action at 5.30pm.

We left it very late to win this one but we played really well and could and should have won much easier.

We dominated most of the game, created any number of good chances but just could not score.

Cian M came closest when he smashed an effort off the inside of the post. We bombarded their goal at times but they were organised and worked hard to keep us out. Their keeper was super so it was a pity that he got badly injured in a fall. Seamus came to the rescue in tending to the stricken player but it looks like he broke his wrist. We actually scored a goal when Oisin blasted to the net in the immediate aftermath of the incident but the referee had stopped play for the injury.

It was not a nice thing to happen their goalkeeper and we all wish him the very best for a quick recovery.

The game lulled for a while after that into half time but normal service resumed in the second half as we laid siege to their goal. We had any number of chances but the ball just would not go in.

That was until three minutes from time when good pressure forced a free kick out on our right. Oisin whipped it in all the way to the far top corner. The place went mad with a huge crowd of parents in the Stands.

It was what we deserved. We worked hard for it, never panicked and tried to stay patient. It was a great way to win a game and put everybody in flying form. Oisin was magic. Jack O’ , Paul, Josh, Adam and Owen K were also very good. But again nobody was poor. It was another great performance. There was a great moment when the players went over to applaud the parents after the game. It perfectly captured the mood.

There was even a bit of a sing song on the bus on the way back to the Hotel. It was then straight into the Restaurant for dinner. We would have eaten anything but there was gorgeous lamb stew, beautiful burgers, fantastic fish and any amount of vegetables, rice and pasta. Then the desert table got hit. Great food.

Then it was back up to the rooms, give back the playing gear, get a shower, relax and freshen up all before a team meeting to review what we did well and what we could do better.

Then it was off to bed for 1030pm.

We have a great day but a tiring one. We play a friendly against another Under-15 team tomorrow but it is an early start.

A great day!
