Malta Day 4 2015-04-04 09:38:00

DAY 4 – FRIDAY 3RD APRIL 2015

Good Friday.

It is also Nashir’s birthday. Happy Birthday Naz!

To be fair Nashir has hardly mentioned over the last few days that it was his birthday on Friday. (Apparently there is a little old woman who lives on the top of a mountain here at the back end of Malta that does not know that it is Nashir’s birthday. We think he told everybody else).

Naz will say that it is not a big deal and that he does not want any great fuss!?? But we could not let that happen.

We were up for an early breakfast for 8.00am. Naz got birthday cards and everyone sang “Happy Birthday” (for the first time today). Then we were on the bus to Mosta to play their Under-15 side in a friendly with a 9.30 kick-off. Their senior team were training on the pitch before us. We are going to see them play Paola Hibernians in the Malta Premier League tomorrow in the National Stadium.

Again the playing facility and dressing rooms are fantastic and we are made warmly welcome.

We have a few injuries and six players sit out the game.

For the rest it was a fantastic match.

                                FRIENDLY -    ADSL    10      :      MOSTA        0

Yes, that reads right. Ten goals and a ten out of ten performance.

We played very well. Probably as well since the Welsh Super Cup last summer.

Our first goal summed it all up. Josh won the ball out on the left flank and turned back inside playing the ball across to Andrew who helped the ball along to Tony who played the ball out to Jack S who played the ball down the line to Jack B who picked out the run of Oisin who played a low ball into the box finished with a first time side foot pass to the back of the net by Jack O’B. Just a brilliant goal!

Jack O’B went on to score three more in the first half. When Jack B’s shot was blocked he pounced on the rebound for 2-0. When the two Jack’s combined the keeper again spilled the ball and it fell to Ryan to score for 3-0. Then Oisin got in on the act with a good goal for 4-0. Jack B then scored a screamer with a pile driver from distance that was still rising as it hit the top left corner of the net. A sensational goal!

Jack O’B then wrapped up his hat-trick. His first effort from the penalty spot was saved but he scored the rebound. Jack then took his haul to four with yet another great finish to leave it 7-0 at half-time.

We made four changes at the break. Ryan hit the crossbar before Aaron played a great ball back to Cian M who took the ball on his chest and then volleyed to the net from close range. 8-0.

Jayden then scored his first ADSL goal with a good finish at the back post. (what ya think of that mum).  Aaron made it ten with a good finish after good work by Cian M off a corner kick routine.

It was an excellent performance notwithstanding the opposition. Zach had a good game in goal, Tony, Josh and Jack S were solid in defence. Robbie, Oisin and skipper for the day Adam were outstanding while the attacking three of Jack O’B, Jack B and Ryan were sensational. Jack O’B’s four goals was only part of a huge overall performance while Jack B scored as good a goal as you will see anywhere.

The mood in the dressing room was superb. Nashir even got another song!

Then it was back on the bus and first back to the hotel. Then we walked down to Pizza Hut for lunch in glorious sunshine. There is a music festival on and the place is hopping.

Lunch was great. Garlic bread starter, then pizza, then chocolate cake for Naz’s birthday (and another song). It does not get much better.

Then back to the hotel and into the swimming pool. The water was cold but the craic was mighty.

At 4.30pm we went to Zeebbug to watch the Good Friday Procession.

It is very impressive and a unique spectacle. There were 700 people in the Procession all wearing period costume. The people put a huge effort into it and it is watched by large crowds. It was very different and an opportunity for the boys to sample an important part of the Maltese culture. All were impressed while Stephen was a little disappointed that there were no fire-eaters or sword swallowers! Come to think of it there were no Fire trucks either and not a sign of the Tubberclair Pipe Band!

The Procession goes on to 10.00pm but we headed back on the bus at 7.00pm and went straight to dinner. Again the food was very good. There was a choice of starters, then two types of fish, stuffed pork, chicken and any amount of vegetables, potatoes, pasta and salad. Then there was the desert! Again it was delicious. Anybody who is hungry has something wrong with them.

We had another good team meeting at 8.30 and then looked at some match DVD’s to better illustrate some of the points made. The participation at the meetings is very good and everyone is learning loads.

Then it was off to bed for 10.00pm with another big day tomorrow.

Another good day in Malta. All are well and happy and enjoying every single second of this.

It was also a good day for Naz! One last time... “Happy Birthday to You, Happy Birthday to You ......”
